Article – LTC

I decided to pick this article as it was reoccurring theme at my rotation that the majority of times geriatric patients were admitted to the hospital was due to falls at home. This article is a high quality systematic review and meta analysis that was recently published in 2022. The author included 34 articles in the analysis and analyzed 22 factors. Of these factors, older age, lower education level, polypharmacy, malnutrition, living alone, living in an urban area, smoking, and alcohol consumption all increased the risk of falls in the aging population. Even non-injury falls were associated with negative impacts, such as anxiety, depression, and decreased mobility, which greatly affect the quality of life (QOL) and aging trajectory. It was shown in this article that physical exercise helps to reduce the risk of falls in geriatric populations and improves lower limb strength. This is why physical therapy is so important in these acute rehab facilities.
